history

The Yeronga Park Pre-school Child Association was formed with a provisional committee on 15 June, 1939. Prime motivators behind the project were Lady Cilento and Mrs W Forgan-Smith, wife of the then Premier of Queensland. The lease of a quarter acre of parkland was negotiated with the Brisbane City Council for a period of twenty years at a yearly rental of 1 shilling (about 10 cents) “if demanded”. On expiration of the lease, renewal could be affected on a five-year basis on payment of an annual rental of 5 pounds 5 shillings (about $10.50).

The construction of a building was considered but deferred due to the outbreak of World War II. When the war ended, fundraising recommenced with sufficient funds and building materials eventually obtained to enable the construction of a building (now known as Unit 1) at a cost of £1100 ($2,200).

The official opening ceremony was held on 22 April 1950.

A further room (Unit 2) was added in 1962 at a cost of £3500 ($7,000) thereby allowing the intake of children to double.

On 13 February 1991, the Association was incorporated, and the name changed to Yeronga Park Kindergarten and Pre-school Association Inc. A further name change to Yeronga Park Kindergarten Association Inc. was effected on 20 August 2008 as a result of the introduction of prep at primary school in place of preschool.

Continuous upgrades and improvements have been undertaken by the parent body as a result of fundraising and successful grant applications. These have included installations or upgrades of air conditioning, sheds, rainwater tanks, landscaping, fencing, the chicken coop, wheelchair accessible ramp, the ‘treehouse’ playground and other refurbishments. Each year, the Management Committee plan and apply for additional grants and fundraising activities to continue improvements to the kindy.
